Discussing Not Hiding

Recently, we have been having a lot of strikes going out. “Strikes” are a way the Eagles hold each other accountable for following the rules of the contract. The “contract” is a list of all the values they created themselves and committed to upholding.

Of course, nobody’s perfect and we all slip up! Sometimes, an Eagle will violate the contract and another Eagle can give them a strike or a warning. A strike is the most severe consequence. If you receive two strikes, you have to send a letter to your parents describing what you did, why you did it, and how you’re going to improve. Get nine strikes and you might be asked to leave our school.

Strikes are pretty severe. And yet in the last couple of weeks, we’ve been seeing the Eagles give them out for little things. For instance, they will give a strike just because someone is annoying them, before having a conversation for conflict resolution!

This isn’t the way they normally act,  so we had a Socratic discussion about it. The Eagles admitted they were going straight to giving strikes because it was an easy way out. The discussion also led to the topic of setting boundaries and communication skills. It was such a great discussion!

Here at Acton Academy, every issue that arises is brought to light and discussed. We talk about it, find a solution, and even find the reason why it’s happening. We know the value of bringing all issues to the surface instead of avoiding them or ignoring them because we all have to deal with trials and tribulations when we get out of school and face the real world.
