What Do Your Children’s Shoes Look Like?

How quickly do your children wear down their shoes? Seems like an odd question, right? But let me share with you the story behind this.

The other day, I overheard a group of moms talking (not Acton moms) about their children’s shoes.

One mom said, “Look at my son’s shoes. They look brand new but they’re old. It’s because all he does all day is sit at a desk and stare at a screen, or he’s just, he’s not outside ever.”

Another mom was agreeing and started reminiscing about when their children had been at an outdoor preschool and had been wearing shoes all the time. She said, “Backup shoes are really necessary because one pair would be muddy and one pair would be full of sand. You just need to have backup shoes.”

This started making me think about the shoes of the children here at Acton Academy. Like my son who’s six-year-old, we go through shoes fast. Sometimes his shoes get muddy or his sole falls off. This is why we really need backup pairs of shoes. The same goes for other children.

I remember the last time that it rained. We have this big mud puddle that forms under the treehouse, and a group of them were jumping and splashing right in the middle of the puddle. They were having so much fun. This was right before pickup so I had to call the parents just to give them a heads-up. I told them, “Just so you know, he’s gonna be muddy” And the parents would just usually laugh and say, “That’s great! That’s okay! We carry towels and backup clothes in our car.”

Here at Acton, we allow the children to go outside for at least three hours a day. Sometimes we even let the, explore their curiosity in the woods. We have an outdoor kitchen in a loose parts area where they can build forts outta pallets and sticks, and just have so much fun in nature.

If this is the kind of environment that you want for your child, you can visit our website to know more about Acton Academy and schedule a phone call or a school tour there.
